Three Great Smartphones to look for this Holiday Season
November 26, 2014 — by WEBOOST
The holiday season of 2014 is shaping up to be a great year for technology gifts. There are a myriad options to choose from, but luckily Mashable.com has compiled the three best smartphones to choose from. Keep reading to see which phone will best suite your families needs.
If you’ve been holding out all year from getting a new smartphone, you made a wise move: All the new fall models are finally available, and they’re some of the best phones we’ve seen in years. From big batteries to big screens to big specs, this season’s smartphone harvest has something for everyone.
Here are our picks for the top phones for the 2014 holiday:
Good: Droid Turbo ($199 with a 2-year contract for 32GB)
With the Droid Turbo, Verizon and Motorola teamed up to create a device that addressed the main complaint about today’s smartphones: battery life. Even though we found its 48-hour claim to be an exaggeration, the Turbo still keeps humming long after other phones started begging for charger — all while staying nice and trim at just 6 ounces.
Throw in the 5.2-inch Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440) display, a 21-megapixel camera and the totally wacky — but undoubtedly convenient — ability to share photos with nearby friends just by “zapping” them with two fingers, and you’ve got a great package for the standard $199 contract price. Another $50 gets you 64GB total storage and the oh-so-sweet ballistic nylon exterior.
Better: iPhone 6 Plus ($299 with a 2-year contract for 16GB)
Two months ago, we weren’t sure what to make of Apple’s 5.5-inch iPhone, the iPhone 6 Plus. Millions of units later, we know: It’s an excellent smartphone, taking the iPhone 6 experience — including iOS 8, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and Apple Pay — and expanding it to phablet size with a full HD display. Add to that a camera with optical image stabilization and you arguably have the best iPhone ever made.
Best: Samsung Galaxy Note Edge ($399 or $429 with a 2-year contract for 32GB)
For a smartphone with something special, there’s nothing quite like the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge — a 5.7-inch phablet with a secondary vertical display curved around one side. The display allows for easy access to favorite apps, news headlines, Twitter topics and more. The edge panel can even turn the phone into a modern-day clock radio by continuously displaying the time at night.
And let’s not forget that the Galaxy Edge is a flagship phone even without its signature accouterment. The speedy processor, ultra-sharp Quad HD display and souped-up camera (complete with optical image stabilization) make the Edge a top-notch smartphone, but its versatile edge panel puts it over the top.
